96 Electra Glide speedometer problem
Pick up the from a shop and 5 miles into the ride and the speedo goes out. The bike was in for leaking base gaskets, so one thing gets solved and a new appears. Any idea what is going on? Thanks, George.
No reading at all, or will not read until your up to 10MPH plus.
If not at all,

VSS Sensor is #34 on back of trans , so unbolt senor, pull it to check the end to see if derbies stuck to end of it that needed to be cleaned, reinstall it and see if problem is fixed. If not, then shop may need to check speedo connectors from VSS to speedo that they diconnected, since problem most likely in one of them not connected back together correctly when they reconnected it, and has popped loose.
If its the no reading until you are past say 10mph on the speedo, and when you pulled the VSS and it did not have derbies on the end of it, then replace the VSS sensor.
The VSS works under magnetite's, and over time, the sensor just goes south as the magnetite's go weak in it.

He'll be looking for a VSS for a while.. The speedo on this model is driven by a mechanical cable..
Chances are the cable broke.

Will teach me to stop reading the microfiche wrong
trans drawing shows VSS to throw me off,
But good look here, shows the cable 31 and wheel assembly 7.

Also, could be cable broken, or just cable end barbs rounded off, but would check the wheel drive unit socket, for cable end receiver sockets rounded out, or the front wheel sensor gears broken and the drive gear not spinning the receiver for the cable end. Hence pull lower cable, spin the front tire, and make sure that receiver for end of cable, is spinning in the drive unit. Then you can check the other end of the cable, to see if broken cable or ends of cable rounded off, if problem is not the speedo, or just cable coming u-threaded from back of speedo in the first place.
