So I tested the coil circuits and they're within, or close to spec. The primary specs are 2.5-3.1 ohms and it tested 3.3. The secondary's specs are 11,250-13,750 ohms and it tested 11.62 k. Can a coil still be bad if the primary circuit tests slightly out of spec? Are there other factors involved besides the circuit? The spark plug wires look good. The long one's resistance is 7.2 k and the short one is 4.8k. Seems ok. Any ideas? I did order new spark plugs and have an extra voes. The ignition module is Screaming Eagle.

A coil can be bad just because it wants to be, they can test fine and break down when hot.

The issue seems to be resolved now. What I think happened was, well, the problem actually started last winter when I waited too long to mix stabilizer in my gas. I then proceeded to pour the proper amount of a very old bottle of Stabil directly into the tank, trying to mix it by shaking the bike back and forth. That is a definite no, no. So, when cleaning the orange goo from the carb jets, A FEW TIMES this year (the stabilizer was sitting like a shark on the bottom of the tank), I pulled the spark plug wires from the coil to make room to reinstall the choke, and unseated the rear one a bit. I think that's what the sputtering was about. The rear spark plug wire wasn't seated all the way, causing a weak spark.

Being my first Harley, I'm still learning new things about the bike, because, most anything that breaks is a new learning experience for me. Like the spark plug wires connected to the coil. I was thinking they were fastened like a cap is fastened to a spark plug head on an automobile. But, no. The wire ends need dielectric grease and to be seated all the way in the coil's base. It's a little too easy for them to slide in and out through the rubber cap. When I popped the wires off to free up room to install the choke cable, the rear one was barely seated after popping the cap back onto the coil.

Thanks to everyone who took a minute to provide insight. I do very much prefer ethanol-FREE gas, which was a typo in the earlier comment. This year I'll try to make sure all of my equipment and bikes have some for the winter. At least I know the Mikuni carb now, like the back of my hand.

You're ignition wires are twice the resistance they should be.. Replace them ...

Alright thanks. I ordered a pair from Drag Specialties (until Harley gets rid of their woke CEO) and will update their resistance readings.

You can use a timing light to help narrow down a misfire before digging in.
Look at the strobe while it’s acting up, if it’s in the ignition, you will be able to see the miss.

Judge the MoCo by its products, not its politics, you have no idea of the pressure that gets put on companies by the woke lobbyists. It would be like a MAGA Dude getting rid of his Harley because he found the CEO was a Democrat...pointless and ridiculous.

CEO of Harley could be a Trans-Greenie for all I care, if the bikes are what I like, I'll buy them.

Why are people so divisive in the Land of the Free???

I'll tell you why they're so divisive over here in this ****ing country, it's because most people think they are deserving and it's owed to them instead of going out and ****ing earning it like they should... They open up their mouths like little sissy bastards instead of dealing with life the way they should...
