ORIGINAL: 99FXSTC...I have a 99 Softail Custom with a breather kit on the carb...
Do you mean you have a SE air filter? Or a different aftermarket model? Or a SE breather kit for the heads (which is usually purchased with the SE air filter)?
ORIGINAL: 99FXSTC...After a ride there is an excessive amount of fuel on the pipes and oil tank from the carb.
There's something amiss with the carb. Was it re-tuned after the pipes/filter?
ORIGINAL: 99FXSTC...I took the air cleaner off and there was a small puddle of gas in it.
You've either got a jet problem, a float needle problem, and/or a main needle problem. Take it apart or take it to a shop that has a dyno and someone that knows how to tune a CV carb using a dyno. It'll be the best $$$ you will spend.
ORIGINAL: 99FXSTC...I expect a little but mine seems way too much.
There shouldn't be any.Check out the tank vent item too.
Thanks Lee n Tj for mentioning the vent hose. Seems like some goofus (me) pinched the vent hose under the battery cable when I replaced the battery. I rearranged everything and so far it seems to be right. By the way, the vapor valve on my 96FXSTC is mounted down on the swing-arm axis frame member.
Regarding the carb issue, I read this in the tech forum:
First though, before you jump into this make sure your carb is not blowing gas into the K&N filter - if it is, the gas will soak the filter and drip. This filter oil, is the oil you are seeing. Pull your filter cover and filter, run the bike, if the gas is being blown out toward the filter you have a carb problem / exhaust problem (reversion they call it). The mismatch between your jetting/timing/and exhaust flow is causing the blowback.
I guess I have a "reversion" problem.
Thanks for all the imput, Ed
