Default Fuel leaking from Carb

Hey guys, I just registered to the forum and I was looking for some help. I have a 99 Softail Custom with a breather kit on the carb and SE pipes. After a ride there is an excessive amount of fuel on the pipes and oil tank from the carb. I expect a little but mine seems way too much. I took the air cleaner off and there was a small puddle of gas in it.It really sucks spending the time to polish the bike then go for a ride and it looks like crap. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ed

if my S&S carb did that i would figure it was the needle and seat sticking or not closing completely.

Is it a stock carb or aftermarket.

I had a problem like that with my cv carb and it was the fuel inlet elbow was cracked. Replaced it and no more leak.

A small piece of dirt on the needle will cause a leak.

And how would you fix that? I just started getting some fuel dripping out of my overflow tube when the bike is parked and the petcock left on. It is an S&S and I was planning on pulling off the bowl and checking the float settingand needle and seat. Is there an easier way than removing the bowl. Also can the float adjustment be done with the carb still on the bike?

Sorry for hijacking the thread.[:-]

Bought my 93 Ultra last year from a collector, it had almost no miles on it as it sat on display 99% of the time. It would drip fuel out of the carb anytime you left the petcock open. Decided to go completely thru the bike due to age and no mileage. Replaced all the gaskets, exhaust, pipes EV27 cam, Jim's lifters, adj. p/rods,rings,singlefire ing.bearings, etc. Set it up for dependable touring. After completion, took it out and ran like a bat of of hell for 10 miles then puked all over itself, figured bad Ing. module, replaced ran strong for 15 miles. After several days wound up being blocked/bad overflow check valvefrom tank. It would not allow pressure built up in tank to escape and would pressurize the fuel and push it thru the carb. I removed the valve form the line, no more problem and I can leave the petcock open all the time again. Buddy's 95 did it to him recently, screwed around with carb til he remembered what I went thru. Removed his and problem solved also. It is a little U shaped piece udder your seat near the back of the tank, by the CBkrs remove it before it causes problems on the road.

i bought a rebuild kit for my S&S super E. i removed the carb from the bike and cleaned it out, replaced the needle and seat, checked the float level and replaced the accelerator pump. i had to redo my carb because the accelerator pump was worn out. i think you can replace the needle and seat and replace the acc. pump with the carb on the bike but it wasn't that bad to remove it and it was a lot easier to work on that way.

Thanks for the input guys. The problem I'm having is that fuel isseeping out of the carb by way of the air cleaner when the bike is running. No drips when it's parked and it's a very small amount of fuel. After a rideyou can seefuel "sprayed" on the oil tank, exhuast, and even the rear fender. It seems like it has gotten progressively worse and really does look like crap on the crome. At first I thought it was aloose exhaust pipe, and in fact the rear was a little loose but that wasn't the cause. My brothers both have pre99 EVOs and both show a little spray but not like mine. It's gotten so bad thatthe fuel got under the rear heat sheild and spayed out onto the rear muffler. The bike only has 9k miles on it so I was wondering if there wasa simple thing I was overlooking.

Thanks again,
Ed

Yeah, I think I will go ahead and pull the carb because I know it will be easier to work on when removed. It has been several years since I swapped out the carb but as I remember the hard part was installing the manifold, the carb install to the manifold was pretty simple. Thanks hotrod.

Lee n Tj - Is that the tank vent vapor valve that you are talking about? And did you replace it or just remove it and leave the vent line open?
