Kill switch
I have 1990 FLHS that I got from a relative. After getting it back on the road I noticed after I ride it for a while it will randomly die. If I switch the kill switch off and back on I can hit the starter button or pop start it if I’m still rolling and it will refire. It’s random but usually after riding for a while. Is the kill switch the issue or is there something else I should look at before replacing it. I have messed with the kill switch while in the garage and never had it not fire after flipping it over and over so heat may be an issue if the switch itself is the problem.
The kill switch could be the issue and that one is easy enough to expose and clean with an electronic contact cleaner (without much disassembly).
However, my thought is leaning towards the keyed ignition switch, but check the kill switch first as that is easier to deal with. People had issue with the keyed switch in the past (long ago history). Less common of an issue now because overtime people have worked these bugs out years ago. However they still pop up from time to time. The contacts in the keyed switch get oxidized over the years and you start to get intermittent contact.
Even though they are not made to be taken apart, some can be, some can't. Once apart you will see what I mean about the contacts. the trick will be getting it all back together.
Maybe pick up a cheapy replacement (aftermarket) switch for diagnostic purposes then go from there.
