I’d like to think our springers are rare and highly collectible, but the truth is there are a lot of them out there. I would hang on to your original cases.. but I’d also go look for a nice used engine. Get up and running.. the option will remain to rebuild your stock cases. Now, if you can scrounge around and come up with engine internals on the cheap… we’ll hay ok. Personally the 1989 cases are not a good option for building power. So stock with a decent cam will probably be about right.

If you buy a used motor stay away from pre 1992. 93-97 are good, 98 up are the best.

Thanks for the advise, guys. I have already told the shop to rebuild my motor, stock, but with an EV27 cam and good valve job. I know this is a weak year, but having the original motor means a lot to me. I don't ride like an animal any more, and because this will be bike number 2 that I keep in Florida, I don't expect it will get a lot of miles. So I'm confident it will last until I can't ride it any more. .

Except for the frame and forks, I am done for now. Oil pump cleaned out and I rubbed the check ball seat with a pushrod end to get a shiny ring. I may bring valve lapping compound with me next year and do it right with a spare pushrod. I cleaned up the primary chain with mineral spirits and then PB Blaster. I think it will be OK, even with some rust on the plates and rollers. I checked all the rollers, they turn freely, and there are no frozen links.

Here's a motorcycle on three shelves, LOL:

Excellent choice. I’m sure it’s gonna be plenty of fun. Nice to have the original motor!

Shop called, the crankshaft he thought he would use has the wrong pinion shaft. So he suggested a new crank, either S&S or V-Twin for a few hundred less. He says the V-Twin would be fine for my low mileage bike, but S&S is better. Does anyone have any experience to help me decide?

If you need a new crank I'd seriously consider doing a 89" stroker. It's all stroke, stock bore. Very dependable.

It would be the best bang for the buck.

I got the motor back from the shop today. He convinced me to keep it at 80" and not open the performance can of worms.

That's it for now. I'll cover everything up and keep it in the spare bedroom.

I'll clean up the frame, swingarm and forks back in CT, and collect what I need to finish next year.

Thanks for following along.

That is how HD did it in the beginning, always one piece bars and top tree (not really a tree but you get the idea). Look at an Knuckle or Flathead, that is the setup.
