If they are hitting, It won't need much off the tube.
I've never done it, but you could probably install the pushrod with the top tube only, finger tighten the lash out, hold tube up in position and turn the engine with the rear wheel to full lift and check clearance

You, my good sir, are a goddamn LEGEND! 😃
I finally got the time to install my new, new lifters today. I say "New, new" because the *finger quotes* Johnson Hylifts *fq* I bought turned out to be some kind of bullshit knockoffs. I immediately returned them & bought some Fueling numbers.
Super straightforward job, but I did remember to check my tubes.
In order: Front exhaust, front inlet, rear exhaust. Oddly, the rear inlet was fine!
I abbreviated them to the suggested length of 4.875" installed new o-rings & changed the oil (just in case)
Damn me, the bike has NEVER been quieter! She runs like a sewing machine, although it's brought to my attention that my left hand gas cap rattles 🤣
Well, the tapping front exhaust valve is still tapping 🤬
It CANNOT be a coincidence that a brand new, name brand lifter is bad & I managed to put THAT one in the exact same position. I've cut the pushrod tubes, checked & double checked pushrod extension & now, suddenly, the damn bike won't start at all. I was checking the noise with a screwdriver in my ear, bike running great & it's just damn well died on me.

*sigh*
Back on the bench tomorrow. Again.
This is REALLY starting to **** me off now.
Do you pre-load the lifters a little when you install them? Also, give it a few miles to really get pumped up if new.
Sorry to hear about the no start.. Check the norms, Fuel, Spark etc. As for still ticking it can take up to a 20 minute ride to fully pump up the lifters.
You had mention knock off pushrods, Do they fit the rocker properly.?

Griz
Yep, I pumped them up, as per Fueling's instructions. It actually seems to get worse after a few miles. When I start her from cold, she's quiet as a mouse.

Bit o' grit in the carb, coincidence & bad timing, but a 5 minute fix!
I 'feel' like they fit the lifters & rocker arms; once I have them at zero lash, there's no side play & they spin freely.
