ah, ok. I think I misunderstood your first post, looked like you were saying you had the style that has the rear hoops and mount points directly under the TP. I am pretty sure the newer bikes use the cantilever setup (top pick in my first post) also, but they usually have the small tour packs.
EDIT: Looked on HD website, they don't list a max weight rating for either style, just say don't exceed tour pack rating. Both styles say they work with king tour pack so probably either is fine, rear hoop style (second pic) if I plan to overload it likely would make most sense due to weight being directly over the mounts.

I have the early style QR on my 87. I don't think the cantilever, or late 09+ will work on the older frames. It's a completely different design. The only difference is the spacing and it's an easy fix.
I've got both HD and CCP racks and mounting systems. The HD mounts are MUCH better, as for the rack...they're pretty close to the same. Although the mounting cups are a slightly different diameter.
