Default Early Softail Turn Signal Function?

I just completed the restoration on a 1990 Fat Boy. All electrical functions work, but I have to hold down the turn signal buttons to get them to work. The 1990 doesn't have a turn signal cancelation module. Is that how they're supposed to work or am I missing something? The original owner had some LED module under the tank for aftermarket turn signals which is why I'm not sure. Thanks.

Yes, 1991 was the first year for self canceling turn signals. 1990 you hold the button as long as you need to, carry on.

'86 Touring bikes had that. I'd have to check the books to see if any others had that. You do not bend the switch tab to adjust the front brake light switch on an Evo

Use a badlands module and they will self-cancel.

My 86 FXR has turn signals that latch on.

1986 only. No aftermarket replacement.

My 1973 Honda CB350 had turn signals that stayed on when I pushed the button. Not self cancelling, but at least you didn't have to hold the button down. I love Harleys, own four of them currently, have been riding them for well over 30 years, but sometimes you have to wonder. 🙄

Also that grey module under the tank that does all the cancellation, you can't get an OEM replacement for the '91 to '95 version, but you can upgrade the plug to new style and use the post-96 version on the older bikes. That was the year they went fully away from the round pin connectors and completely to the Deutsch connectors that were sealed. I also upgraded my 1992 Fatboy handlebar wiring to the new connectors when I did my rebuild.
