Doubtful there's much of a groove but I've learned over the years, regardless of the machine, always best to always have a clean, smooth surface for a new seal to ride on.

Yes, I am going to pull all the guts out and look them over, except for pressing out the main drive gear. The gasket set will have everything I need.

I would also replace the spacer, oil seal, and quad seal that are hiding behind the transmission sprocket.

Use new locking bolts for the retaining nut lock plate.
