new to HD & buying used: Evo vs TC88
Thanks for all the responses. I've found a 97 WG (silver & red) with 37K and two owners. Apparently nothing mechanical has been replaced on it yet. It has a fatboy wheel and superglide fender with the license plate relocated on the left side. Drap pipes with carb retuned, shield, bags, nice pegs, bobtail fender, original seats and pipes, rear spoke wheel, and a re-paint job to original factory color that's only 5 yrs old.
I'll post a pic if I buy it later this week as planned! It's a 4hr drive to go see it. I won't be sleeping well until then. Oh, and I told the seller that he doesn't get paid until its safely loaded into the back of my truck!
Thanks again for all the replies!!!
My 1996 WG has the original paint in perfect condition. I can't imagine anything short of flood damage or a wreck that would cause someone to repaint to stock colors. Well, maybe leaving it outside instead of garaging it?
Why the different front end? Not too many people would buy a WG and then put a fat tire on the front. Defeats the purpose imho. I'm not saying no one would, but If it were wrecked and someone had a chance to buy a fat front cheap...?
Just my $.02, but I'd be looking for a spotless, original, low mileage, unmolested unit. Stage1 or 2 and some chrome goodies and maybe a seat upgrade would fit right in with my plans, but not the things you're describing.
There are gobs of genuine low mileage original bikes out there at good prices.
Please just take my comments as random thoughts and not as know-it-all stuff. You do what you wish, of course.
BTW, I think my 1996 Wide Glide, as nice as it is, is worth only about $9k max. It has about 20k miles on it and it has gobs of extras. Remember that there are lots of good used Harleys out there. It's a buyer's market...
Good luck!
1996 WG:

If you buy it, ditch the drag pipes. See if he still has the stock headers. You can just add some nice-sounding mufflers and have an relatively cheap exhaust system that works at all rpm.
Let us know how it turns out.
I've also gotta agree with the others that it's a buyers market out there, when the sellers want to sell. There are way too many good low mile newer HD's out there to choose from, which is driving the prices of the older bikes down below where their owners will part with them.
Hell, I just saw a fine shovelhead Craigslist: http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcy/425769153.htmlfor $7K that I'd love to have in my garage. If I had the room/$$$
**Since I bought it, I removed the drag pipes and put on stock pipes with SE mufflers. much better! ...discovered it also has a K&N filter, so the backplate must have been changed too....

I bought the '97 red/silver WG! I couldn't sleep for several nights, waiting until I could go see it, hoping it was all I thought it would be. I slept better the night before I got married! I had to get up and hit hwy by 4:00 a.m. 'cause I couldn't go back to sleep!
It has a superglide rear fender over a softail custom sold rear wheel that's been chromed on the edge. Bobtail fender came along with the original spoke wheel. Windshield, H-D bags with supports, drag pipes & stock ones too. It also has some chrome pieces on the handle bars. The paint is in pretty good shape and overall the bike is very clean!
The pipes are too loud for my taste, so I may insert some baffles. It sounds and runs great, and without any backfire, but I don't want to irritate my neighbors too much...
The license plate is mounted on the left side down by the shock, and that looks great, but I may go back to the bobtail fender and I don't know how that's going to look.
I've only ridden it 200 miles, but so far it seems like a well maintained Dyna. It's a blast to ride, and no need to hot-rod it to be exciting. I'll post some pics when I get some taken....
Thanks for all the input! The Evo is just right for me!
