Hi
A question for you Evo H-D fan.
I own a 1996 Dyna ( bought this summer ) with 70 000 miles.
I switch from dino. to syntech. oil ( Amsoil 20w50 ).
When cold, the oil level is a bit above the cold mark, but, when i ride
it does not come to hot level, it stays at the cold level. The cap is only warm after 50 miles. I can pop off it with my bare hand.
Is it normal ? Is this oil so good it never gets hot ??
For sure here in Quebec at this time of year the temp. is not very high, but i can not believe the oil does not get hot after 50 miles and does not come to the hot mark on the dipstick.
What do you tink ?
Thank you.
Cyril
from Quebec , Canada.
P.S. The oil light comes onwith ignitionand off after the bike is running, like normal operetion. The bike runs great, except clicking noise when hot.
I have the same situation with my oil level, hot or cold stays the same /almost/.I don't worry about it any more.Mine is 96 fxdl,65 ths miles, now SE syn3 oil and HD oil filter. When I change oil I just put 3 quarts, like manual says, and after ,ocasionaly add a bit of oil. And by the way,it's not much warmer in Ontario.Mat
Sounds just like my 98 Dyna. I'd say its normal. Twin Cams get much hotter, but well tuned EVO's run cooler and my oil cap is rarely too hot to touch (except on those 38 degree summer days!) -- and my level is nearly the same, hot or cold.
Thanks for yours responses guys.
Your are right Ben, all the answers came at first from Canadian fellows. Amazing.
I think the explanation on this same level question is that the syntech. oil does not expand as much than dyno oil when hot.
Others opinions on thisfrom the south of the border side ?
Canadians responses still welcome.
Cyril.
Ok, Here is a Florida boy. My level changes a little now with Mobil 1, but not as much as it did with dino oil. Even then I had to ride it for a ways to get a different reading.
I would not worry about it. Evos sure run cooler than twinkies. I have a pressure gauge on mine and see no difference.
