Default bad case 1989 ultra

oil is getting from the engine into the primary.the case seal has been changed twice and no better.are we lucky enough to have the bad case problem that so many 89 and 90 models had or can it be something else?

If you're sure the seal has been changed properly I would say you've found the reason.

Bummer. Just build it better and badder this time

Ya need to check the regulator wire bracket retaining bolts . I had the same problem and beat nyself up bad , thinking new engine . I put dye in the oil and rechecked and it was the bracket screws ( or lack of ) . Someone previously had replaced the regulator and use silicone to hold the plug and wires going into primary . Oil was coming from the bolt holes , they go all the way into case . I hope ya see this before going any further .

Same situation I was faced several years ago.....previous owner just siliconed the plug and failed to screw the bracketin place. Definately a good idea to check this out.....before venturing further.

you know, its worth taking a look at because we thought the oil that at the time was coming out where the plug goes through the case was just a plug that was leaking.since the bike had alot of miles and we didnt know the past history on it we changed the whole stator.now,im no expert wrench but should i have put some silacone under the head of the bolts holding the stator on cause i no i just screwed them back in.i really appreciate your help.

I called my engine builder and he say for you to pull the inner primary off and remove the timing plug then shoot some air into the cases and look to see were the oil bubbles out. If its coming from were the steel sleeve (which is for the bearing) fits into the case then you can send them off to STD and they can repair the case. Hopefully it just the screws need RTV. If you need a address or phone number to STD I maybeable to get it.

Before pulling the primary I would go to napa and buy the engine oil dye . Put it in the tank , then pull the and run the engine a little bit . Pull the outer primary and the crank pulley . Use a ultraviolet light to inspect again , you will see a yellow trace from source of leak .

My buddy had a '89 flht with the same issue and I own a 1985 fltc. Because the manufacture recalled the problem for the '89 he got his motor replaced at no charge. I ran into the same problem, but mine was due to pulling a trailer which puts to much torque on the main bearing and seal. I called the factory and spoke with customer service and they comfirmed the recall for 1989 but nothing for my scoot. Just thought I'd mention it...

Later,
Mark
