Default transmission 1985 evo 5 speed

Went for a spin today and had heaps of trouble finding 1, 2 when dropping back. Almost had to lift the gear lever up THEN down to find the gears. Any ideas before I pull it apart

If you have a 85 it's a 4 spd............Anyway, follow the shifter rod back from the shifter and it will go to a point where it connects to a steel tab.Two steel levers slide against each other and when they become dry or dirty ,they will bind and you will have to lift your shifter up and down with your foot. Flood these levers with wd40 or equal and it will start shifting normal again

I'd bet my last dollar the 85 FXRT has a 5 speed

Make sure your clutch is adjusted properly. Welcome to Evo land. Pics, we need to see some pics of that FXRT.

It's most likely a 5spd in a 4spd case.

I always thought that 1986 was the first year of the 5 speed. Was that just for some models, or am I clear off here???

I have a 1986 Heritage (first year Heritage) and it's a 5 speed for sure. I was always told that was the first year for that trans. My bad???

I'll try to find the old brochure. The FXRT definitely came with a 5 speed from the factory in '85.
It's an awesome machine. Still waiting for pics

I have an 84 FXR (FXRP) with a wet clutch 5 speed and chain drive.
No questions about it.
