Default removing steering head cap without scratching

1998 FXDWG. I need to tighten by steering head and was wondering what others use to remove the chrome cap that covers the steering head bolt and top triple tree nut. I sure don't want to scratch it.

Thanks,

I used a needle nose vise grip (large size) with the jaws wrapped with electrical tape. It may be a bit rusty (depending on year) it's a small bolt in there, ?1/4 X 20?, so be careful not to use too much force and break it off.

I just unscrew it by hand, if it's too tight, I use one of those rubber adjustable strap jar opener things (I don't know if they have a name or not). as seen on TV!

Thanks guys,

Got it taken care of. I wasn't sure if it snapped on or screwed on. Yep, it screwed on.

For what it's worth, plumbers use some of those strap tools for tightening highly finished faucets and escutcheons. You can get them at plumbing supply houses that sell to plumbers. You might be able to get them at Home Depot and other HI places too but I'm not sure about that.

I use a piece inner tube. Any soft rubber will work tho unless it's just really tight.
