Well need to change it out I guess, Anybody ever change there own? if so whats the difficulty raiting? Talked to my wrench said it would cost about 800 bones to replace it. So figured I'd see maybe i could give it a whirl.
Starter clutch replacement is pretty much straight forward. Take the starter off, take it apart, replace the clutch (60-135 dollars) put her back together. Difficulty rating 3-4 with a manual, without a manual and no experience 20+. Get a service manual before u do anything. just my .02
Like Paco says, its just the starter clutch. Online $100, here in Canada at the dealer, $150. I just did mine last fall. Not too hard, get a service manual if you don't already have one. I took the opportunity to pull the outer primary and check the chain properly, and install new gasket and fresh fluid too. Also had to pull the exhaust on my Dyna; others may be different. Put new exhaust gaskets in at the same time.
Also cleaned up the copper contacts in the starter with a wire brush. Works like brand new now. Probably two hours or so work, depending on beer breaks and how many friends help. (more friends = longer job :-)
you can get a new one from midwest/jijreh for $275 chrome 1.7
but you might not need it because on my roadking the starter jackshaft
bolt loosend up and the starter gear would just spin. (no locktight)
you have to remove youre outer primary to pull the starter any way so before you
loosen the bolts on the starter look at the jackshaft bolt to see #1 is it there
#2 is it tight. thats free cant beat free.
