I've been thinking about getting a pair of fatboy rims for the Heritage. I've often wondered if you can clear coat them. That's what they do on auto rims and theylookgoodfor years.
I wipe it down with brake clean (sprayed on a rag not the wheel) then I use S100 Corrosion protection. I think I am going to switch to just using a good wax, the S100 is too pricey and wax will do just as good. I am in the process of sanding and polishing the rim lip right now, the PO had let them oxidize somewhat.
Before I got mine chromed, I used diluted Simple Green and a hand brush EVERY time I road.
The trick (for me) was not letting the dirt and grime build up to a point where the wheels were becoming stained. If your not an OCD bike cleaner (like me) I would look into the clear coat option as well.
i'm very **** about keeping my bike clean but, the guy who bought it new wasn't asanal *** me so the rims are starting to get the haze to them. when i put the new back rubber on it, i still had it on blocks, started the bike, put it in first and let it idle while i used a peice of 1000 grit sandpaper just to see how it would work (ONLY on the outer edge). thanks for the feedback
just for the record....THESE RIMS DON'T MAKE THE BIKE WANDER ALL OVER THE ROAD BECAUSE THEY ARE SOLID!!!!!!!!!!!!you got to figure, if you have a full dresser or sadlebags, you have just as much wind resistance if not more with a bike with spokes. not only that, if spoke wheels are spinning at 60mph, they are a solid too!!!!!!!!!!just my 2cents
