Unsteady idling when cold
I have a 96 FLHR, that is stock, with the exception of the Dyna 2000i ignition module.
Recently, i'm noticing that the idling from the motor is kinda 'erratic' when cold. It idles slow and nice, then picks up to a faster RPM, then goes back to being slow after about 5 seconds. It does this until the bike is warm enough and the RPM eventually picks up and won't go back down. (now in this case, it's idling fast) I grab a screwdriver and turn down the idling speed about 60 degrees.. and the bike dies.
It can't idle low like how the Evos idle. It has to be turned up. Now i'm wondering if there is a problem with the module..
Or can it be that the carb is not properly tuned? Would I need to make the air/fuel mixture richer?
First, get it warmed up, running at a low a speed as you can (even if that's a fast idle). Using WD40 or most any automotive aresol spray (other than starting fliud) with a tube nozzle, spray around the manifold where it meets the head, front and rear. If/when the speed or sound of the engine changes - you've foundan intake leak. Take care to not be fooled by overspray getting sucked into the mouth of the carburetor.
If all that check out, here's a link that will clue you in on the proper way to FIX your carb. A very good article! And remember, before you change jets or anything, you MUST adjust the idle mixture screw which is sealed off from the factory. Again, the articles in the link will explain all this very well.

I changed out the manifold intake seals a few months ago as the old ones were there since the bike left the factory so I doubt it's the seals but would check.
Thanks for the article on tuning the carb. I have never removed the carb before much less knew the mixture was sealed and I had to dill into it.
I'll report back with my results after I'm done with work..
