primary oil
well said never had issues with synthetics casuing oil leaks. Easiest soloution if your worried about which oil to put in your primary is this.....junk it and go with a belt drive primary never have to worry about which oil to use ever again
Mayby you missed my above post. Do not put synthetic oil in your primary at any time. Plus I have never seen a 10w synthetic but even if it is made do not let your clutch touch synthetic oil.
You might get away synthetic oil in your primary if you ride real easy and never let itrip oncein a while like I like to do.

Been running Amsoil 10-40 in my primary for years and years. And it rips all the time.Change it once a season and it comes out clear like when I put it in.Your anti-synthetic primary theory is no good.Toby

As far as it coming out clear in your primary, no matter what oil you put in the primary it should come out clear just like your tranny. The primary and tranny do not have carbon build up from dirty gasolinepiston explosions like your motor. That is what makes your mptor oil dirty. I had a truck that ran on propane at one time and due to the clean burning fuel that propane is my oil came out clear. Gasoline is a very dirty burning fuel in comparison to propane.
To 92 FLHS, 20-50w in the primary is way to thick especially if you live north where the weather is cold. Think about the fact that your clutch has to push out the 50w when you engage it. Some use Automatic Tranny fluid in the primary and 10w oil is really all that you need. 20w would be the heaviest to use and definatly not 50w. Your clutch is a wet or dry clutch which means that you can ride with a dry clutch. The oil in the primary is really only to oil the chain which as we all know doesn't need that much lubrication. Kindof like your older rear chain drive which was fine if your keptoiled. The benifit to a sealed and oiled chain like your primary is that it does not get dirty and the chain last longer due to this.
My Pan had a chain drive primarylike my Evo with a dry clutch. No differance from the Pan to the Evo to speak of.
hum seems the MoCo has now issues either http://www.completemotorcare.com/Harley.pdf
I tend to use one quart of diesel 15w40 in the primary or any cheap 20w50 in there. No problems for me and the primary really doesn't need any expensive magic oil in there.
Lubricants as well as bikes have made improvements everyday. The older HD brand primary lube was labeled a semi-synthetic primary fluid. The amsoil 10-40 which is full syn. is actually made with the non-HD bikes in mind. Those that share a common sump w/transmission.This oil is also designed for "slipper clutches" which are designed to slip under hard de-celeration so the rear wheel doesn`t lock up completley and loose control.Examp.:try to push start your bike using 1st gear.Rear tire lock -up!Not good on a race bike at 120+ in a turn!If these oils can do and keep the plates working , I don`t think it`s gonna hurt my bike too much.If you really CARE to know that it works ask Lubedealer above and he can re-inforce this also. There are way too many misconceptions regarding syn. oil and this no syn in primary is one of them. You can make a syn. oil do whatever you need it to do by adding the correct components that make up that particular syn.Maybe you shouldn`t run Molbil1 in a primary.I`m not familiar with there make up.Amsoil is Great for your primary and it should be known.Oh Yeah,I`m a dealer and I do know what I`m talking about, and i`m nottrying to make sales.Trying to help others make an educated decision on what they need/want and pros/cons.The debate continues!I`m out.Toby

I am very pro synthetic, I have been using it for over 22 years. Before most people knew about it's benifit. I broke in my 1989 with synthetic when new.I tried synthetic in my primary one time and learned a hard lesson. I turned a good clutch into a "slipper clutch".

Toby, are you the guy that "argued" and threatened any that disagreed, that Evo's need a oil cooler and the forum locked out the post because of you, after correcting you that you were wrong there too?
Einstein, type "slipper clutch" on a search engine such as google. Not all synthetics are created equal. IF the synthetic oil you ran in your primary ruined it ,it must not have been designed to handle that duty.Oh,by the way, slipper clutches are standard on high output rice rockets.T
