Axle alignment jig? Never heard of that one. Dunno how I've done 75K miles on my bike without it.
You need a basic tool set and that's about it.
Actually there is one to align the tranny and motor to the rear wheel. If you ever remove your motor your have to do that. I read a artical about a guy using 8 foot flourensant light bulbs as a straight line jig toadjust everything.
Although in this case I think he is talking about alignning the rear tire after removal. That is made with a welding rod and one small O ring.
As far as replacing the lower jug gaskets, it is a pretty easy job, you do have to lower the motor by taking off the front motor mount. And as long as you are there you might as well freshen up the motor and replace the rings. Couldn't hurt. I had to do the leaking lower jug gasket at 50k.
How bad was the base gasket leak. I get some seepage, nothing dripping, just a dark stain really. First had it on the front jug on the right side, and not a bit on the back jug at the backside. 42000 km -- about 25000 miles.
I bought both the FSM and Parts manual for my FXR from Zanotti's HD in Pennsylvania. Shoot an e-mail to John or Tim at the parts department there with the specifics on your model. They will get back to you usually the same day with the part numbers for the manuals and the prices including shipping. I have found the parts manual to be invaluable. My local dealer can't order parts for me unless I bring my own book in for them to see, they do not have one[:@].
Thanks for all the info guys, guess I will be buying the parts and shop manual ( is that the one i need?) or service manual next. As always you are of tremendous assistance to us newbie wrenches
Meveratt : the leak was not bad just seepage but since she is very clean and in such good shape to be sweet 16 I figured I would keep her that way
Oh and Beemervet : My 92 has Torx bolts on top of the jugs next to the spark plugs.... go figure

The headbolts are not torx bolts. I do not know for sure what they are called,I just call them the 12 point bolts or star bolts. Torx bolts are like a allen bolt but with the star design inside.
You are right about jug seepage, you did not have to replace the gasket just for a little seepage. I replace mine after years when the seepage increased, stillI did not need to replace it.
I enjoyed the artical on Harley oil. What a bunch of crap concerning the oil being tested especially for HD. Do those guys think that everyone is a idiot. Or are they trying to get as many idiots as they can tobuy justtheir oil. Believe it or not there was a time when HDwere not the lieing money grubbers that they are now. That was when Harleys were dangerous and sex was safe.

I have my own parts book because if I don't provide the part numbers I have to look them up at the dealer anyway. I've even had to go into the back to pull my own parts. T shirt salesmen should not work in parts.
