Default Cam Choice

Is there anyone out there that is or has run the Andrews ev38 cam? How does it compare to the ev27? I like the fact that Andrews claims that it will lower oil temp due to the exhaust valve timing and I guess the extra .005 lift. They claim that the 38 comes in at 2200rpm, the 27 comes in at 2000, not much of a loss if any.

What do you think?

Depends how heavy the bike is, and the gearing. I run an EV27 in my dresser, but the compression is on the high side and it has the 3.37 gearing. I would be leary adding more cam to my particuliar combination.

Its an FXST, weighs in at 625lbs. I would be a little concerned too, but Andrews says 2200-6000 for the 38, andthe 27 is advertized as 2000-6000. 200 rpm don't seem to make much of a difference.????

I've got a 93 FXSTC and a few months ago I did 10 to 1 SE pistons, SE air filter, rejetted the stock carb, changed the rev limit to 6500 and went with and Andrews EV46 cam & springs. I wish I would have went with a bigger cam. And honetly the bike doesn't feel super fast though it's a night and day difference compared to stock but I have not lost a race yet, kinda weird. lol.

Guess it depends on what you want it to do then. Personally, I think that if you are looking for performance, thenyou have to go the whole route, of which entails not only the cam change, but exhaust, coil and ignition, carb work and especially the heads which need special attention. It all works together.
I think that you will probably see more difference performance wise by the seat of your pants though with head work.
The cam change will add to the experience though.
Currently I am runnin'a Vthunder 3010 which is a good low end cam, but as many have said before, the Woods W6 is a killer choice, so for me this is what I will be going with probably next year.

I went with the EV27 and went to 68.3 HP and 81 TQ, gave me the passing torque I was looking for and gas milage is great 45 to 50 and it has 45,000 miles on it, cam and changes has only been 200 miles. I also went with screaming eagle pushrods and jims lifters, it has Rush 2.25 with a hypercharger for air. Mines an EFI so I went with the Revtech Dfo with the 4 pods for adjustments.

I have been running an EV27 for a few years now and have been pleased with its performance. I also have a Mikuni HSR42, Dyna 2000 single fire ignition, Jims big axle lifters, se roller rockers, and Vance&Hines streight shots baffles in. The bike runs great, and gets 45-50mpg. However, my crank is going by-by. Lots of metal in oil and knocking real bad now. I am sending my engine off to the HD remanufacturing program and trying to decide on a replacement cam when I get it back. The EV38 came to mind when I read about its .005 lift differencial. It gives a little more lift and durationon the exhaust side in an attempt to provide oil cooling. This concept is of interest to me. However, I would like to know if anyone has had any experience (or know of anyone who has) with this cam before I go into uncharted territory.

For the record, the set up I have been running has yeilded 73HP and 78lbft.Tq. on the rear wheel.

Thanks guys for all your input.

Over the winter I had a number of things done to my 89 Evo, one of which was the installation of a Wood 6 grind cam. The mechanic that was doing the motor work for me insisted that the Wood 6 was a much better choice than the EV27, and I'm inclined to believe him based on the results. I also got new lifters, adjustable pushrods and had the heads shaved. I had swapped to a CV carb already, but updated it with Wood needle and jets, and added a Big Sucker air cleaner. I used the Fullsac conversion to go to true duals and added new Cycle Shack slip ons. I already had a Spyke ignition, installed last summer (which by itself had made a noticeable improvement).

The sum total of these changes, largely driven by the cam change, has made the bike seem like a different machine. It pulls smoothly from 2000 on up (haven't really gotten much beyond 4000 yet), and the valve train noise is not significantly louder than stock. Plus the idle sounds really cool. It's still a heavy bike (Ultra) and isn't going to win any races, but it's got so much more oomph to it now that, like I said, it seems like a different bike. Got almost 1000 miles on the motor since the upgrades -- can't recommend that Wood 6 cam enough.

What's an EV38? Andrews' website doesn't list it.
