Some advice from a newbie
A few notes on why you should always check the obvious first.
Only had my 90 Ultraglide a couple of months, a few issues ironed out - a few small things were still outstanding, including a persistent quite load ticking when pulling hard, which seemed to be coming from the front head. Asked advice and got a few suggestions, all seeming to be about failing tappets or excess wear in the rocker arms etc. I had the bike into a dealer to remove some knacker screws from the derby cover and got them to do a quick once over at the same time. Same conclusion, tappets or bad wear in the rocker arms.
So - what do you do, I prepared myself to strip and replace the tappets and check the clearances etc - one last ride before i start. Walking the bike out of the garage I noticed a tick, similar to the engine noise? but with the engine not running?
A quick look around, hey presto! I loose cable under the fuel tank - couldn't believe it, a loose cable was knocking against the fuel tank in time with the engine stroke! A small foam pad to stop the cable moving and the ticking has gone!
So the moral, check check and recheck and when you think you have checked enough, check again..
