My friend has a 1998 Heritage softtail it has a vibration on the left side of the motor. He think's it is in the primary, every thing in the primary is new except the compensator, we are wondering if that could be the problem? It broke a primary chain, that is why all was changed don't know why the dealer did not change the compensator sprocket. anyone else ever had this problem?
I have heard of the compensator causing a rattle, not vibration. \\; I agree, take it back to the dealer if it was something that started just after their work.
Been back to the dealer on 3 different time's they keep saying nothing wrong , but it sure is funny it didn't vibrate before they did the work. Wrote to the factory an basically they blew him off an said if he wasn't satisfied then he could take anywhere he wanted. Only problem here in Jacksonville Fl. the same people own all 3 dealership's. They said it was all in his head, bulls*t I have been riding along side thia guy for 4 year's an he never had the vibration before so go figure. Guess he will have to find a real Harley mechanic to fix it. All these new so call mechanic's only know how to work on twin cam's no old school. I told him if a certified mechanic in another shop found the problem the next phone call would be to his lawyer.
Yep all the bolt's have been checked, new clutch pack, new primary chain, new adjuster, all mounting bolt's checked, everything except the compensator has been changed guess that is next but we will damn sure do it ourself **** on the dealer.hope that doe's the trick .
If the chain issue caused a hard stop for the engine, it's very possible the flywheels were knocked out-of-true. Also could have bent the sprocket shaft (not enough to see except on a truing stand). And/or the sprocket shaft bearing could have been damaged. Those are all worse case scenerios.

Primary chain out-of-adjustment can cause vibration too. We'll hope the compensator washer (spring pack) is the culprit.

How can you tell it is on the left side? Is only the left side vibrating? I mean can you visually see only the left side vibrate? Or is it just the primary that is vibrating? Maybe check the magnets on the inside of the rotor that is behind the comp sprocket sometimes the glue that holds the magnets goes south and doesn't hold the magnets in their proper position which will cause a vibration. if the magnets are loose, the only way to fix it is to get a new rotor.
