I am trying to reinstall the pressure plate after replacing the clutch plates. I already broke 2 pressure plates! I have the correct spring compressor tool. How the hell is this done? Im baffled. I put the pressure plate on there and then the spring followed by the compressor tool. Tighten it up snug, then the washer (convex side out) then the flat washer, then the clip. i tighten a little more, its almost there but i cant seem to get that snap ring on! Theres no holes in it to grab with snap ring pliers, any tricks im missing here? any tips on how to install the nap ring? any help is appreciated...its an 86 EVO sporster...Tom
After you get the diaphragm compressed enough I use a small flat blade screwdriver to get it in and out.
Those hubs are aluminum and it's real easy to crack or bust a tab off. Be very careful of what tool you use. I have a Motion Pro spring compressor and it was only $48. new.
Very easy to bust a tab. Just chipped one luckily. My first time doing this. Get the tool. Got mine at georges-garage.com. The factory tool looks like it would allow easier access to the ring, but I got it out, can't reuse it but it's out. Factory repair manual suggests using a screwdriver (alternative method) "gently" to remove the ring. That's how I chipped the tab, but the ring doesn't have holes in the ends so my snap ring tool was useless. Must be a magical HD tool for that one.
