Hello all,
Long time so hear !! Hope all is well. Got a question for all you guys. I am on my 4th ultima ignition mod. Had one go out at Little Stugis a couple yrs ago. Bought one there and had it replaced. got home and Jireh replaced the ignition. sent me one for my 107 . 53-645. i replaced the one from the rally which was a 53-644. well last weekend the 53-645 went out. it would start but would not go. start and die. had the extra in the shop so i replaced the ignition and all was well for about 4 days. coming home from work yesterday it started skipping, backfireing and then shutdown. started her back up and it ran for a second or 2 and went dead. Got her back home in the shop and my new ignition from Jireh had arrived. I thought maybe the coil had grounded out or something. Pulled the tank and tried to start the engine and the coil was fireing without the engine turning over. go figure. put the new ignition mod in and all is well again.
Any one else had problems with the ultima ignition or am I doing something to damage the ignition. I did have to jump the bike one morning with a battery charger with boost on it. Is there a better ignition I can use on my bagger ? Help me understand please !!

thanks yall, steve

Paco,
The last I knew, Ultima igmitions were rebadged Dyna's which are tried and proven. How much end-play do you have on the cam??? Could the rotor cup be hitting the ignition module??? How much voltage are you putting out on the charging system?? Too much voltage can damage electrical components. Hope this helps.

Hey Paco!! How have you been? I lost the factory ignition on my motor around 5000 miles. I replaced it with the Crane Hi 4 and have not had an issue since then. Been over 15,000 miles.

I went thru two ignition modules and a coil last year, all Ultima.
I replaced the coil with a Twin Tec and had no further problems. Just last week I installed a Twin Tec programmable module to fine tune the ignition curves a little better.
I have also heard that the heat from the nose cone area can cause module problems. Make sure you arent running lean at idle.

Hey Goat ! Bike is looking good ! Been riding as much as I can. we rode down to Key West during bike week and then back up to Daytona. i ride somewhere every weekend and everyday to work. Hope you are doing well.

Thanks John, I didnt see any damage or spots that look like the mod or the cup were damaged. I will check the volt output. like i said, i did jump it off with a charger that had the cranking boost on it.

Big Red, I have always wondered about the heat from the engine and the nose cone, but have have a friend with a RedHorse and he has been running one for 10 yrs with one failure. its not a big inch motor but it still gets hot. will a crane hi4 work with my tach ? I read somewhere that these progarmable units have to have software or something.

I run the Dyna 2000, and you run a wire from the module to the tach, and another wire to the coil if you run single fire. Works perfect.
The software on the Dyna is for additional features and/or advanced programmability.

Paco, The wiring in the directions are very easy to follow and as 98 FLHX stated, the software is if you need to add your own timing curves for racing or just tinkering. The module comes with many curves, some for multi-spark enabled or disabled, and some for either single or duel fire. Another nice touch is the adjustable rev-limiter. Their dirrections are easy to follow and they have a great Web site.
I think that Ultima may have had a bad batch and those of us on this forem were the lucky ones to get them!!!

One of the things that can contribute to early ignition module demise is using the wrong gasket on the nose cone. Most ignitions come with a thicker ring type gaskets. Some people choose to use the stock one which is thinner and when you tighten down on the cover it puts the cover in contact with the module and could do two things. First it would conduct more heat into the module, seccondly it could put some torque on the modue which could damage the circuit board. Just my thoughts on the subject.

Hey thanks guys,

BigRed and 98FLHX i am going to check on the HI 4 and maybe get one on order. BigREd, i think i bought most of the bad batch.

John, never thought of the cover hitting the module. I will check it when i get home. I have a skull cover and it could very well be touching.

Thanks !
