Lever does not move left to right, it is nice and tight ....... oh well. Time for a rebuild. Is rebuilding to a six speed adviseable?
I am considering replacing my charging system with a 32 amp system as well,
any thoughts?

I'm an old 4 speed type so 6 speeds I like the RPM's at 65 MPH to be 3000 + or - The 32 amp system is great ! Good luck

True, 3000 RPM at 65 and the bikes seems to be in a groove. Being on the border of IL and IA, we do have some higher limits on the interstate (IA) and I do plan on doing some touring next year.......
Who knows, $ will dictate final decision anyway

Read a number of posts about complaints of noise from 6-speeds, but I remember most were of factory units. Makes sense that 6 gears in a 5 case - everything would have to be smaller to fit. Also, many TC-88 riders complain of NO power in 6th gear, even at high speeds... but I don't know thier riding styles or expectations.

Rode to Sturgis-Reno-Seattle this fall on mine ('87 FLT 5 speed) Always a sweet spot at 55, 65, 72 but it was fine at sustained 80 for hours on end and no overheating or oil consumption.

32 amp is a good deal. They don't charge as well at idle, but the pins on the regulator are much more beefy and give less trouble due to elimination of corrosion/bad contact compared to the tiny 2-pin or the 22 amp model.

If you've been into metric transmissions, you'll have no trouble going into that one. Takes a number of special tools though.

Happy wrenching!

This started happening before the 1st gear problem, so it may be related.
This is not an uncommon issue with bikes of our era. My bike is virtually identical to yours. You have a different color and radio. I've had this same problem for the last 20 years. I had a factory trained mechanic blueprint my transmission some time ago. He couldn't find anything out of spec. It still does it. Not all the time, and usually when it does, it is when I'm really nailing it. So, while it's not a "they all do that" issue, it is a "a lot of them do that" issue. Oh, and 4th gear whine is normal for ours. They redesigned the case in 87, I think, to reduce the noise so they could pass the federal noise regs easier.

Now, your jumping out of first gear issue, that's different. Something ain't right there and I suspect you'll have to go into it for that one.
