Default Changing cam a little easier.

I'm doing a cam bearing & lifter change on my '94 EVO and I found that instead of removing the base rocker box & having to deal with cleaning up the stuck-on OEM paper gasket mess, I could just get the piston set at ignition TDC and remove the rocker shafts & rockers and pull the pushrods out from the top. This is how it's done on airplane engines and it works on Harleys too. Only if the base gaskets aren't leaking, of course. And also you need to drain the oil out of your lifters or else replace them with new ones so they can be pushed in when you go back with the rockers.

Just my two cents.

John

Thumbs up

I did it that way many times. Finally bought fully adjustable pushtubes... Another good thing to have is 4 STRONG, but small magnets to hold the lifters up while the cam is being pulled out or put back. 2 strong horseshoe magnets the correct width are just as good.

Always good to share tips 'n tricks

I was going to say if you use adjustable push rods you dont have to take the rocker boxes apart at all. therefore no tank removal or any of that stuff. worth the cost of the adjustable pushrods if no work is needed in the rocker box area.

Not all adjustables will shorten enough to come out that way. You have to watch what you buy. I have adjustables on both my evos, but not the quick remove type. It still saves me alot of time by not having to remove the lower rocker boxes. The uppers are a breeze.

You can R&R the cam, bearing, pinion with the non-timesavers and strong magnets. I've done it several times. The tricky part is that you have to do it with the timing marks NOT lined up and rotate the pinion about 30 degrees back and forth to get it all wiggled out and in (if memory serves me). Simply count teeth, mark or whatever and of course, when it's all back "in" rotate the pinion and double check the breather, pinion and cam marks.

If I have to do it again, I'll probably go with the adjustable pushrods. This time it worked out for the best since I found all of the 5/16' bolts that hold the bottom piece on weren't even close to the correct torque value. I noticed it when I took out the ones that lock the rocker shafts in place. They all took nearly a quarter turn to tighten them up.
