Default Rocker Boxes

Pulled the tank and getting ready to go into the rocker boxes to remove the push rods so I can complete my cam conversion. I have seen plenty of reviews with pictures for the cam conversion but have not seen any on going through the rocker boxes instead of using adjustable push rods. Any points or tips before I go in? I do have the manual and have been inside the cam chest before for cam shoe inspection.

Thanks for any help or suggestions
Don

Hi roaddog,

Alternate turning the four bolts on the rocker arm supports when loosening and tightening. Don't leave one bolt holding it all.

Another tip would be to clean most of the oil from the holes in the lower box for the rocker arm supports before re-installing them. I use a few q-tips. Some folks may think I am loco, but I have seen those holes get enough oil drained in there to cause the bolts to hydro-lock before they are snug. Not every time, but sometimes is enough.

Position the piston at TDC on the compression stroke so the valves are closed and there is no tension on the valve springs. Don't know what model you have but the frame can get in the way of pullin the exhaust pushrod on the rear cylinder. You don't have to remove the supports, just loosen the fastners and push them out of the way. If you are running an earlier model, this would be a good time to replace the plastic head breathers with the metal pieces. If the head breathers are already metal, replace the umbrella valves and packing.

pull the cam cover, since your going to be in there anyway. the cam gear set on the timing mark (5 o-clock) will give you the rear cyl. at the base of the cam lobes. (valves closed). the cam gear 180* from mark (1 o-clock), will give you the front cyl. hope this helps. steve
