Default Got a suprise tonite

I just tore down my 88' FLHTC to install my new EV27 and I find a SE II cam and big axle lifters. I just traded for this bike in the fall and got what I thought was all the service records "I thought", None of them said anything about a new cam and lifters. How is my performance with the EV27 going to compare to the SE II? From what I can tell the SE cam is designed more for light bikes. Glad I tore it down though the cam is pitting where it rides in the cam bearing Glad I got a new bearing!!

Well, you're gonna lose a good bit of lift and lot of duration. On the other hand, the SE-II is NOT a bolt in cam, meaning it has had valve springs replaced at the least.

Screaming Eagle cams, for at least Evos, were made by Crane. I've had 2 and they both pitted on the bearing end, one after 100 miles. Someone told me they wouldn't do that with an INA because of the difference of metal composition of the INA was more compatible with the metal of the cam - but who knows? I'm staying with the Torrington.

EV-27 is average duration of 238 and .495 lift. The SE-II is average duration of about 262 and .516 lift. The 27 is a very popular cam - lots of people run them and speak highly but duration is where it's at on a heavy bike if you like to grab a big handful at 75mph and watch the world go by really fast, you'll definitely know the difference right away. Otherwise using conservative acceleration and regular cruising, you'll be happy with the Andrews. Doubtful you'd ever be able to appreciate a lot of difference unless you went back to stock - then you'd really be sick

This bike was breathing through a stock breather, Butterfly carb and stock pipes to begin with so there was no way it was running close to what the cam was needing as far as breathing, I have a CV carb, Ness big sucker and free flowing slip ons. Should make a difference I think.

The E27 is a good cam especially for two up riding.

Your bike will run better with the ev27 on the bottom end up to around 4500 then the seII would over take it. But it would hard to know for sure just because of the stock air and exhaust. you should upgrade those and rejet the carb. and it might really come alive.

Hardluk, I have already installed a Ness Big Sucker breather and I have a set of free flowing slip-ons to go back on it. Andrews recomends a 48 or 50 slow jet and 185 main, I currently have a 45 slow and 175 main which seemed a little lean. I'm going to start off with the 48/185 combo and see how that works. I have never really reved it hard because I didn't know the condition of the lifters. The ol'girl seems to be in pretty good shape, good compression doesn't smoke or use oil. As soon as I can get to Waynesville Autozone and rent a blind hole puller I'll be ready to put her back together and see how she runs. I would like to get some headwork done but I think I'll probably wait til it needs a top-end and get em done then. Kids will probably want Christmas presents so I'm about spent out right now. LOL

You're probably feeling lean cause of the low jet. Do yourself a favor and go with the 48 low jet FIRST and then go up on the high jet if you need to. As I said earlier, the heads at least have high lift springs already because of the SE-2 cam. I'm running an '87 with 48/175 (mild cam) and get 50mpg+ if I'm careful and the plugs read perfect mixture - never gets hot if I'm rolling at all.

Here's a link that might help when you get to all that...

Can you figure out if it has a stock needle in it or if someone has put dynajet kit in . You might read up at nightrider on carb tuneing but the 48 might be ok . Could allway drill out the 45 too. That 175 might be good in the mountains. Check the needle setting, Might be ? shimmed or mult clips poistion. You can get some midrange ajustment there. I have my head wrapped around adarn mikuni now but talk to buddy seat around the carb section. good guy with cv's.When you get done and want to check Dal-kawa in Hendersonville has a dyno with a/f analizer if needed. 50mpg sounds darn good.
Don't winter suck . I have road less this than in the last 11. Might get out monday looks like a good weather day.

This winter seems to have been colder than usual, or at least what we've had the past few years. I haven't rode much at all in the past month, every pretty day I have had other plans with the family. I don't mind cold weather riding too much as long as I can keep my hands warm, (arthiritis setting in) I'm hoping to have it put back together by monday really interested to see what kind of difference it makes now that it can breathe. i am replacing head pipes also. 20 years old and they are starting to crack. Got a set from a friend who just put on true duals. We all hang onto our old parts and give them to each other when needed.

I remember when Harley used to sell performance kits for Evos with a long duration cam-either the SE2 or something similar- and bagger owners hated it. The heavy bikes couldn't get out of their own way til they were going 80mph- the stock cam performed better about 90% of the time. I think you'll be much happier with the EV27, especially with the much-needed free-flowing air cleaner and exhaust.
