Default evo engine shuts off while coasting to stop

my bike is a 86 fxwg with stage 2 upgrade (super e carb, cam, dual fire ignition) I recently went for a cruise and allowed the bike to get really low on gas. I almost made it to the gas station when it shut off on me. I went and filled it up with gas, and took off again. it rode fine until I slowed at a light to stop. once I had reached first gear, and while holding in the clutch, slow rolling to the light it shut off again. I took it to a parking lot and tested it several times, and it did the same thing every time I downshifted to first or coasted in neutral. strangly enough sitting and letting it idle in neutral or in gear (engaging the clutch) it runs just fine. any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like your engine isn't getting sufficient fuel when idling down. I believe the most probable location of the problem is in the fuel bowl of the carburetor. While the bike is moving, junk in there may be sloshing around and impairing flow through the idle system. Take it off and check for foreign material. You could just remove the drain plug and see what comes out but you can't really see what is in there or effectively clean it out without removing the fuel bowl. While it's off you can check the condition of the needle valve and float level too. If you find bad stuff in there, you may need to clean up your fuel system from the tank through the carb. And replace your fuel filter.
I don't expect your problem to be anything serious or expensive.

Would totally agree, a little bit of crude dislodged from the bottom of the tank when you ran it down. Quick darby clean and she should be good as gold. Oh and a new fuel filter.

Agree with the others. Clean your gas tank, pipes and float bowl, also gas tap filter if it has one. You've dragged up ages old muck in the tank that has been waiting for just this opportunity!
