Hello I have a 04 1200c that I am having problems with the float sticking. I replaced float and needle hoping this would fix problem. Some times it pours fuel on the ground and other times runs fine no drips. It has been a on again off again situation for the past few months. Bike is stock except v/h slipons, with just over 10k miles. It seems to happen more with a full tank.Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
There is an over flow vent, at the top of the fuel tank. With the tank full and a hot engine, the gas will expand. This causes the gas to rise into the over flow and leak out. Under the bike, between the swing arm and engine, is a small 1/4" hose. This is were the gas will be coming from.
Did you replace the seat for the needle?Did you clean the entire carb and the filter in the tank?Does the bike run properly?Do you shut off the fuel while parked?Does it pour fuel on the ground while running?
You replaced the float but did you adjust it? Your gas cap is a vented cap I believe. If the vent in the cap is bad your tank will build pressure and puke out the overflow.
bike only leaks fuel while running. Didnt clean filter, not sure it has one unless its on the petcock. float is adjusted and carb was cleaned. I didnt replace the seat. Rode about 100 miles and bike ran great. This time float didnt stick. When it does stick black smoke out of exhaust and gas runs out of overflow under bike. I have taken gas cap off of tank while running and float sticking and gas kept pouring out of overflow tube. Might take carb apart again and see if I overlooked something. Thanks for your replies, been on vactation theis week and rode bike everyday no problems, just don't think it would correct itself.
May be worth giving your tank a flush and rinse, clean the filter off, and put new fuel line on. Especially if you run ethenol gas, that stuff rots eats the inner wall of the fuel line pretty quick. Also replace the float needle seat. And double check that you even have your float set at the proper level.
I replaced the the petcock on my 04 Sporty with a pingle and plugged the vacuum line and no more problems .. Just be sure shut the petcock off when not running the Bike .. This may not be your answer just sharing what worked for me ..
The only thing I can think of is to replace the float pivot, and look at the seat and valve, and the float height.
Make sure the bowl is not bent or over tightened, and the float operates smoothly, and there are no gaskets in the way.
Any dirt or rust will cause the problem, I once painted an old bike and the inside of the tank got rusty during the paint stripping process, and that bike overflowed gas all the time. It was a dirt bike and would die unless being ridden, it would load up at idle as the fuel level built up in the carb.
I assume you would have seen any dirt/rust in the bowl tho..
