Default cam clearance

Today I tried to install a new cam in my 87 evo. The new cam is a VThunder 5015(.585 ex lift), the old cam is unknown. But in the gear case the lobe closest to the bearing does not have enough clearance. Is this the case for all years? Am I limmited to what exausht lift I can run? I am think about grinding the case so that lobe will fit, has anyone tried this or think it will work?
Thanks guys

There is a relief tool made to cut clearance in the case. You can also do it with a die grinder. You need .060" minimum clearance. Don't forget to check piston, rocker box, lifter to lifter block, valve keeper to valve guide and valve to valve clearance. Hope this helps.

Its common to have to remove material on all evos when installing a cam with that much lift. Jims tools offers the tools to help. Also georges tools has something similar to jims for a little cheaper I think but dont know if the quality is as good as jims. As stated above a die grinder will also do. Hope this helps and good luck. Oh yeah, you may have to remove a little material on the underside of your rocker covers. Again, as stated above, check all your clearances.
