Those radio caddys were dealer installed items back then, not from Harley. Your gauges are the same gauges as on the 88-95 fairings, but it would be alot easier to leave the gauges there and go with an aftermarket detachable fairing. Anything can be done though.

I bought my 84 in 88 and I don't know if the 'inner fairing' was aftermarket or HD accessory. I've asked at the 4 shops around here I go to occasionally and none have the accessory book going back that far.

Pictures attached. The black grommet fits over the washer on the outside. Lost one of them and haven't found an adequate replacement yet - the nut and bolt covers stick out too far, IMO.

The 'inner fairing' on mine is basically a couple of pcs of fiberboard , with a hole thorugh the fairing itself and then a couple of brackets fabbed to come off the bolts by the dash. I don't even use those brackets anymore since the fiberboard even with speakers attached is held OK by the bolts through the fairing and using the brackets makes the job more frustating.

D_mn - should have washed the bike before taking the pictures but it's raining

Hey wulffe,
I have the 1987 HD accessories catalog here in my lap, Page 12. Your radio caddy is:

"FLHT Caddy Kit Less Radio Chassis - Installs neatly under fairing . Comes complete with metal caddy frame, dual 4" coaxial speakers mounted on speaker wings, mounting hardware, etc. Requires adding your own radio before installing. DOES NOT ACCEPT PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM SHOWN ON PAGE 17. 77023-84 Fits '83-'85 FLHT....$174.95"

Your speakers look different, but I think the wings part is from the kit. The ones that come with the kit have a opening that is sort of square. The guages are from Guage Kit 75020-84 for a 84 FLT, FLHT, $149.95.

Dr. Thank's much, that's great info. I didn't know the guages were accessories as well. The speakers have been changed over the years. Std bolt pattern on the wings. I can almost put a 6x9 speaker in but don't want to cut up the originals so I'll probably cut a few more inserts at some point.

I second your wife's suggestion. I realize it is your bike, so do whatever you want, but I pulled the radio out of mine and covered up the hole with some diamond plate. I just can't see the point of a radio on a motorcycle. I'm trying to get away from all the constant auditory input when I ride, not add to it. But, like I said, your bike.

One more thought - an iPod would be much easier.

I remove this radio system from 1985 FLHT.
I think it was some aftermarket.
