I used to see lots of people pull a motor without pulling the inner primary. You still have to pull the chain off, of course, but you can leave the clutch alone. It is probably as much a PITA to do it that way as to just pull the clutch off too.

I've never pulled an inner primary to R&R an Evo... but I do take the top-end off first and build it back in the frame

You can get away with only an R&R on the rocker boxes to swap engines though. And you have to support the trans with a jack, else the nose of the inner will drop down too far in the frame to get it all back together. (on rubber mount bikes)

There is a good thread to look through when you get time:

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/evo-c...el-bagger.html

It inspired me to want to try replacing the engine in our '90 flhtcu, and yes, it was not easy as I had to do almost everything more than once to get it right. It was a new experience for my wife and me. I still have questions about the setup, but so far with a little over 3000 miles on the new engine it seems pretty good. I seem to remember one of the individuals with a non rubber mounted engine had more trouble/work with engine alignment.

With ours, the hardest part was getting the compensating nut loose, I spent a couple days on that. In the end it was not too bad, once I learned I needed to have a block wedged in the primary chain to prevent any movement, and a long breaker bar.

on edit: It took me about a year to finally make the move, during that time I saved up the money to cover the cost as well as read everything I could on how it was done and what would fit. I did not have enough money to have a professional do it, and I really wanted to try doing it myself.

I have replaced the engine on my 1990 FLHS with an aftermarket one (S&S 107) and kept the oil filter under the trans, where it has always been. You'll need a long drink before you start reading that thread Pajoe pointed you to, but there is a lot of very good stuff in it!

I don't have the skills or tools to do such a big job, so I got a specialist to fit my S&S. You should find that any evo or evo replacement will fit your bike. Do look around at alternatives to a Harley engine. There is a lot of attraction in having a 100 + inches, horsepower and torque! I have over 5k miles on my S&S now.

Keep us posted on what you decide.

To answer your original question, yes, any evo will fit. I prefer the oil filter underneath also, and you can keep yours there. The mount on the front of the engine comes right off. It is not alot of trouble to remove the primary, I use a harmonic balancer puller to get the clutch hub off. Just remember to support the trans when you remove the engine. Some othe posts on here offer some good advice, aftermarket engines such as ultimas offer a good bang for the buck. It's all about what you want to do with the bike.

Default Just want to change the motor now

I did a complete new primary side change durring the winter and this spring did a cam side change but kept the cam as it was in very good shape..

I took a 100 mile ride yesterday and half way through the ride i noticed it smoking when i was at the stop signs.. Black and a little blue gray in color ..on my way home it started skipping
and then started shipping bad ... i mean real bad .. but it would stay running and still start.. I got it home and checked the points this morning and they look good .. I pulled the plugs and the front one looks diffrent than the back one ... (picture included) ..

I dont know if its coil, wires, just a bad plug or my timing got out of line ..
I try to start it now and it back fired out the exhaust like a shot gun but then started and idels ... but still skips like hell if you try to take it for a ride...

I got so much money in this engine now it hurts my titcker ..

Default The price is out of line for what i have

I have a 1985 FLHT that i tried selling for $4500 and nobody has offered any money for it .. (thats when it was running good) .. The price of the ultima or S&S motors on ebay start at $4000 plus shipping ...
Dam.. i cant get a loan for the engine when the bike is not worth the price of the ultima or S&S engines ...

video when it was running good .. http://www.youtube.com/user/OpryStation

Points?? When you converted over, did you change the coils? They are different for points vs electronic. The pic looks like gas fouling to me, like maybe the coil or a plug wire. I would seriously consider going back to electronic. They are very reliable, and will put out a stronger spark. Just look on ebay for an evo take off, nothing fancy. That bike can last a long time yet with just a little attention now and then.

Default points system

I bought this with the points system in it already ..
I just sanded the points and put in new plugs and its back running like a bear again ..
Im not going to keep the bike or i would invest in the electronic kit ..
Im selling this for $4500 as i want to buy a classic pickup or car ..
