can you run a crane single fire hi4 with a stock coil on a 92 evo setup, or does the coil have to be a true single fire coil. the ignition i have doesnt have a setting for single or dual. its only single.
Single coil. I have the Crane ignition and it is a dual fire or single. So if I want to switch to a dual coil I have to change the single coil out for the dual coil.
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm mistaken, since I've not had hands-on with a Crane but...
If you are running a single fire coil (each plug fires separately) then all you have to do to run in dual fire (both wires fire every round) you simply use the front trigger wire from the module and run a jumper across the 2 trigger posts on the coil. And of course if you have a dual fire coil that's all it can ever be.
So yes, you can use the Crane with a stock coil by using the "front" trigger wire from the module to the trigger post on the coil. But dual fire is all you will ever have without changing the coil.

I understand what you posted and am not sure if you have the nose cone or module HI-4. There should be a selectable single/dual fire dip switch as my HI-4 module has. If so, then just set the dip switch to dual fire with the stock coil. Otherwise, try what T150vej advised although I've never tried that method myself.
I'm running true single fire ignition now with a single fire coil and the module set on single fire. Prior to that I was running dual fire on the same module with a dual fire SE coil. I would recommend as an upgrade if you wish to stay with dual fire. I really like the rear cylinder offset feature on the HI-4, but a spare Dyna 2000 module set up the same, spare coil and pickup when traveling long distances.

I'm running the same ignition in the nose cone and I've been told that the crane modules have an overheating problem in the cone and it was rec. to me that I should buy an extension kit to run it under the seat where it would stay cooler. Haven't had any problems yet but thought I'd throw it out there.

Good point, which is why I run the separate module and the stock HD pickup.
