Ok guys ive got an 85 and I have the chance to get a whole exhaust off of a 2005 Road King. My question is, is this a bolt on as long as I use the newer slip on mufflers?
Hang on to that crossover tube. They are rare if intact. As in virtually unobtainium.
I had to add plugs for the oxygen sensor bungs, and the bolts that hold the muffler on under the bags are coarse thread on the new ones and fine thread on ours, so if you didn't get those 4 bolts, you'll need to pick some up. I think I had to massage the new bracket that bolts to the starter area or use my old one, otherwise everything fits perfect, down to the last cover.

No idea. It probably comes down to wanting to sell one versus needing to buy one. When you can get an entire exhaust system for $50-100 delivered with virtually 0 miles on it, that does drop the value. I would guesstimate that the crossover tube would be worth about what you paid for your new exhaust. I would have gave that for a mint crossover (no cracks, no welds) when I was looking for one. Would have saved me a lot of time MIGing up the busted one behind the dealer in Pierre.
I noticed that the new system has heavier steel than the old one.
Last year I lucked-up and snagged one off ebay for 50.00 OEM in original wrapper. I think the last "list price" I saw for one when they were still avaliable was 185.00+
So, +1 for keeping it. You may find someone like me one day who just HAS to keep his stuff original....
Well I just got the new exhaust on, the mufflers are Kerkers and they are really loud, they almost sound like drag pipes. But all in all the bike looks a bunch better.
