I don't think Torrington or Timken exist anymore as a company name. The most recent company name escapes me at the moment, but I think it's the same people building the same product under another company name. Like mentioned....the B-138, B-148 (Twin Cam)...etc. are trade names....so-to-speak. It is very easy to tell when you have a needle-bearing filled with rollers and the INA type filled with a plastic cage and 1/2 the rollers. The Ford 207 bearing is a very common wheel bearing in older vehicles, yet everybody and his twisted-sister makes a 207.
The one that failed on me was in a used bike I had purchased from a seller that swore it was box-stock. It had 10,000 miles on it when I bought it and it crapped-out at around 22K. Not sure how long that aftermarket cam had ran inside the original INA, but I know at least 12,000 miles.
Last time I asked, the dealers wanted $500 just to go into the cam-chest and $100 just to replace the bearing if you drive the bike in on a trailer already pulled-down. If you don't have the tools to do this, but do have the mechanical know-how......buy the darn tools off e-bay then sell them after you're done. You may lose $25-or-so in the transaction, but it beats paying the stealership 4-5 times that much. The bearing can be had for $6-$8.
I think you'll find that both companies still exist. Most ball and roller type bearings are made by a wide variety of manufacturers, so the crowded roller cam bearing is probably available from other brands.
