I looked at buying an Ultima, but couldn't get a US dealer to ship one to the UK. Also prices over here get distorted by our taxes and other things, so I bought an S&S 107. It gives just over 100 for both hp and torque. It is easy to get used to that sort of performance and think of wanting yet more! I have the stock clutch, with a Barnett hd spring fitted, but more displacement means more expense, not only for the bigger motor, but a stronger clutch, bigger starter.....

So if you are thinking of buying a new motor, don't rush in - just think how big can you really go!

The 113 is sitting in the garage. Had the old one out already so all I have to do is pull the inner primary and I can put the new bullet in and start assembling. I'll post some pics.

Rented a 2009 Road Glide this weekend. Mama wanted to get out. Made me appreciate my old Fatboy even more. No character. Ran hot. Really didn't ride that much better than mine.

When you install the stator, just screw the set srcew for the plug in until it is flush with the case. If you go farther you may short out one of the wires and that is not good. Be sure to check the clearance between the fuel tank and the throttle linkage through the full range from idle to full throttle as clearance can be a problem. If you have any questions please feel free to E-Mail us as we've installed a lot of Ultimas. Hope this helps.

Thanks, John. The only question I have right now is my service manual says you have to replace the stator retaining screws. Is that the case? Are they torque to yield? Can I go to the hardware store and get a capscrew to replace them? Thanks in advance for responses.

Just put the old ones back in with some blue loc-tite. The reason they say to replace them is the new ones have loc-tite on them. We re-use them all the time and have not had a failure ever! Torque them to 100-120 inch pounds or 10 foot pounds.

John,

Sent you a pm but I'll post the question here too.

I'm putting my 113 in and I have question about the seal from the motor to the primary. I'm using a wet primary and the seal in the Ultima is in the opposite as my and 80 and the service manual. Which way is correct?

What is the best way to line the motor and the tranny up? Thanks for the responses so far. I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Fatboy931,

Many others know a better way, but with my setup using a Craftsman motorcycle lift, I was able to get everything lined up using a small bottle jack under the transmission to lift it up to the proper height.

Another mistake I made: I missed the little set screw in the engine block behind the inner primary to hold the plug for the stator and ended up removing the inner primary a second time.

I think I ended up doing most things more than once to get it right. It was a lot of work but when it was all together and I started it for the first time I was smiling from ear to ear - everything was great until I dropped it into gear and could not get it back out because of the easy lite clutch kit I installed.

Just some food for thought, you might want to replace the front motor mount with one from a V-rod. It is much stiffer so you might feel just a little bit of vibration, but it is much better for handling and engine stability. Either way dont forget to check overall alignment as per the shop manual. Be sure to check the front motor mount, there can be some interference in the center slot on the engine. If so just grind off the affected areas of the engine, the mount must set squarely on the engine!

There are three lines going from the engine to the oil tank, a feed, a return, and a vent. Now is the time to cut the vent line, put a tee in there. Then add a line to the tee that goes up under the seat/battery area and put a filtered breather on it. The breather system on these engines was designed for an 80" engine and did not do the job well at that displacement. How well do you think it will work on the larger displacements?? We've been doing this for years and it cuts way down on gasket leaks. Just a little trick we found and decided to share. Hope this helps.

Thanks, guys. I've got a softail so no motor mount to worry about. The tranny bolts are a pain to get to because of the low mounted shocks. I don't want to put the tranny in a bind and waste the bearing in the inner primary. Need to support the bike so I can pull the shocks and do the alignment per the factory manual. Everything bolts together but getting the primary back off of the motor takes a little force. I think I'm going to pull the motor back out a check the fit between the primary and the motor to see if it's just a tight fit and causing the problem

Thanks for the tip on the vent I'd read your recommendation before and I plan on doing it.

Bill
