They are glued on. The safest way is to remove the outer fairing and work from the inside and outside at the same time. You can remove them from outside, but sometimes you can bend them. Heat from a hair dryer sometimes helps too. Be extra careful when you re-apply them as the glue has a tendency to bleed through. While you gave the outer off it is a good time to do some maintenance on the connections and grounds under there. Hope this helps.
