my 1988 softail is losing spark at the front cylinder. its got a screaming eagle coil. when i check it with a in line spark tester its got none. but when i turn it off it gets a spark with a back fire. i am thing it might be a coil but not sure? now i fixed the bad wiring job that the last owner did for the coil.
Replace the spark plug wires first Spin engine over plugs removed have someone hold the spark plug (plug wire attached ) against the alum cyl head and look for spark jumping across the plug gap
Before springing for new wires, why not swap the wires with a bud, and see if the problem follows, I know its not a big expense, but why spend if you don't have too. Maybe your own wires will reach if reversed? Not just front for back, but wire for wire. At one time I grabbed one from my cage just to check.

Had the same problem on a custom bike. When I started working on it. I found that someone had mounted the coil on wrong. What happened is the retaining screw for the chrome cover had been screwed into the coil causing it to short and not run on the front cyl.
Check that out
Another point to check is the modual. If it is the stock dual fire it will fire both cyl. or none. If you have a single fire system and it is wired as a dual fire it may or may not work. If it is a screemig eagle modual it will have dip switches on the back that you can switch from a single fire or dual fire.
Check that out as well.
