stevelonewolf,
Thanks man.
carlgrover,
If you checked it at the rotor I'm willing to bet you have zero (or pretty close to zero) side to side play and maybe even preload on the bearings. You probably should not ride the bike until you have addressed this and made sure there is sufficient clearance.
I don't have the book for that late of a model, but what I do have gives a lot of different specs for different bikes, spoke or alloy wheels and front or rear. I'm running .002 on a front alloy with 107,000 miles on the original bearings, so...
Calrgrover, why not use a stethescope or long screwdriver to ear and locate the precise origin of the noise. If the bearing is still suspect, pull it down. Wheel bearing set-up isn't rocket science and seals are cheap...
I finally got over to the shop that did my bearings and we discussed the whine. We think it might simply be one of the seals rubbing one of the spacers. He had checked the axle free play (with the bearings dry). Everything else seems to be in good order. The whine is starting to fade out. I'm going to keep an eye on it and if it gets worse, will take it to him. He doesn't think it is the bearings but offered to tear it back down again and double check.
