Default 1987 FLHTC seat options???

Do I have other options? What makes an 89-96 seat not work on the older touring bikes. I bring home an 87 FLHTC this weekend and want something else.

Harley changed the way the seat is bolted down. I suspect yours is like mine, with a bolt either side through the grab-handle up into the seat? I bought a Corbin while they still listed them. Whatever I do in the future I will use that as the basis. If you had a later seat in your hands it might be possible to work out how to use it. Mustang , Corbin or other seat makers may still be able to make you one as a special order. Or keep your eyes on Ebay as suggested.

I never did it, but I did read a few posts where fellows were successful adapting a newer style seat to older bikes.

We ended up buying a Mustang seat for our '90 flhtcu, there really was not much of a selection other than Mustang:

I searched all around for a seat for my 87. Finally bought one from Mustang. They were the only one that I found that offered seats for my year. So far have been happy with it although I did make my own brackets and moved the seat back an inch or so to fit me better.

Thanks for the info. Any of you know if an older stock seat will fit, say from an 85 or 86?

An 86 seat will fit, which is the same seat as stock on my '90 and your '87.

84 and 85 have the front mounting plate on the seat and the tongue on the bike. That reversed at some point jafter that; maybe 86 or 87.

My 84 does not have a split for a backrest. I bought a used one listed as an 85 on Ebay (which mounts up fine) which has a split although the bottom plastic would need to be cut to use it. Seating position seems to be an inch or two forward from the 84 to the 85. Maybe because of the split or maybe years of riding on the original moved the sweet spot on the original seat backwards.

I don't find the 85 to be as comfortable so I'm still looking for an aftermarket someone is selling at a reasonable price. The Mustang which is still available is awfully expensive new. The pillow look seat looks kind of goofy to me when I'm riding w/o the tourpak

I would guess that was 86. That is the year on the part number for 87-90 Glides.

Beardo, I have the Mustang Regal 2-up seat with the studs on the far right in Joe's pics. I love it! Mustangs are expensive, but it's the most comfortable seat I've ever had. Way better than the rock-hard Corbin that was on it when I bought the bike. I sold the Corbin for $300 on FleaBay, so the Mustang only ended up costing under $100 net. I still feel good about that deal! Of course, I then added the rider backrest... but that's another story. I love that thing, too. Feels like a recliner!

Mustang has smooth seats too, if you're not into the plush look, with studs or without. They can make a seat to fit just about anything. I put smooth studded one on my wife's V-Star, because they don't make a plush one for that bike, and the smooth looks better on it anyway.

If you end up buying a Mustang seat, I'd suggest checking out M and M Cycles. They can get new stuff from a number of different manufacturers for an average 20% off list. I bought my and my wifes' seats, my pipes and her pipes, and a whole bunch of other stuff from them. They can get H-D parts for about 20% off list, too.
