No such luck here.... It was 21 when I left the house... If I get out of here early enough today, I might get in a dinner ride this evening...

48 here in CT right now. That's the warmest it's been in a long time. Still plenty of snow on the ground though, and sand and salt on the roads.

Have you got your head gasket fixed yet Slim? Just wondering whether you found anything out of the ordinary....

Big can of worms. On removal of the head, it was obvious that the gasket had been leaking slightly close to the cylinder wall for a while before it 'blew'. The heat generated at the leak damaged both the jug and the head. The head may be repairable, but the cylinder is not. The cylinder studs are shot due to increased heat from the leak. I had felt that the bike was losing power slightly, but it wasn't that dramatic and I didn't hear anything unusual, so I attributed it to other possible causes before the gasket went completely.

I was at my local indy shop, where I had the bike towed, just yesterday discussing options. He had come out with his trailer and rescued me on the roadside back in November but then broke his shoulder shortly after so the bike has been in limbo until last week. Since the front cylinder/head need replacing, I think I'm going to do both front and rear so they will be matched. He has a slightly used set that were takeoffs from a hot rod motor he built for someone several years back, so I think I'm going to go with those. As long as I'm in this deep, I'm going to have the 'new' heads ported and milled (my old heads were milled .060), along with a valve job and new S&S springs.

On the bright side, he only has one other bike in the shop at the moment, so mine will get his full attention and hopefully will be turned around in a couple of weeks, depending on how busy the machine shop is. And my son recently moved back to CA, so he's no longer on my auto insurance. The money I'm saving there will finance this rebuild.
