I bought my '98 Evo in Wisconsin, but its a California bike, with California emissions control (charcoal can) on it. I had assumed, wrongly, that the can was still attached to the carb breather, but when I cleaned the air filter, I realized it had been detached. If the jets have not been reduced to non-CA jets, and are still larger, can I harm my Evo? The easy answer is to have a shop check it out, but is this necessary?
I dont have a whole lotta experince with the ca bikes, but i would ****** all the s^%t off of it and rejet accordingly.Actuall jet sizes will depend on mods, location, etc. But a good starting point at SL is 45 slow speed and 160 or so main.If youre not confident in jetting and tuning, then take it to a reputable shop. You can do damage with improper jetting.Im sure there are some guys on here more familar with ca bikes and can probably give some solid advice.
You wont really harm anyhting, but if its running rough or it doesnt seem smooth, then figure out what size jets you would need by elevation of riding and intake and pipes. I had a 98 fatboy and the carb was very easy to remove. I had it out 3 or 4 times to rejet when I put a big sucker and thunderheader on it
Charcoal cannisters catch gas fumes from the gas tank, then releases them to the carb at startup. When you're running, it does nothing and won't affect the fuel mixture.

At engine start-up, a vacuum line from the carburetor will purge or draw off the vapors in the canister and direct hem to the engine combustion chambers. The vapor valve prevents gasoline from escaping through the vapor vent when the vehicle is tipped at an abnormal angle. A large diameter hose purges the cannister with fresh air from the air cleaner through the air cleaner backing plate.
Your next purchase, before you do anything else, should be a genuine HD shop manual. Next, I'd just take all that cannister crap off. Run a hose from the tank down to the ground, which is how the non-PRC bikes are. Plug the holes in the backing plate. Jet the carb.
Yep, its all off now, and all plugged as well from the previous owner. I just don't know if its been jetted down or not, and was trying to figure if this is a must do. Thanks! It's a hard starter either at 40 degrees or 80!
My advise would be to pull of the carb and see what jets are in there. Chances are if the canister has been removed then it was rejetted, but if I remember right the jets have #'s on them? Again its easy to remove and install the carb
Cali carbs will have a 160 main jet stock. Too small if running anything but stock pipes. Pull it and go with a 170 or 175. Do a plug check. White too lean, black too rich, brown just right.
