Can we use regular automotive wheel brg. grease for the wheel brg's. on our Harleys, or do we need to use Harley wheel brg. grease?
Also, what about the steering head brg. zerk. Is standard gl-2 grease gun grease OK, or do we need Harley grease gun grease?
At least it's not about oil.
Automotive wheel bearing grease is fine on the harley wheel bearings.....wheel bearing grease is wheel bearing grease. The steering head does not need much grease....I've just used whatever grease was in the grease gun at the time. Others here may say differently......
170,000 miles with no bearing failure due to type of grease.
Thanks EVOrider; I always used Valvoline wheel brg. grease in my Sporty, and never had a problem in 50,000 miles. Just wanted to check to see if things had changed. I will use what I have in my grease gun for the steering head, which is I think gl-2.
Yep, GTG, Jim. I believe what I have on the shelf right now, is, Valvoline.
Beings you will have the scoot up in the air, and doing front end bearings, this would also be a good time to check your "fall away". The amount of force needed to turn front end. I jus' use a small fish scale. Check the book, 12#s, comes to mind, BUT that is prob'ly mine, why it flashed thru.
I am a big believer in Genuine H.D. wheel bearing grease. I will not allow any other on my bikes.
+1 ...to the tenth degree!
We had a long discussion a good while back about wheel bearings but I'm too lazy to look it up and post a link.
I rode 200 miles today to get this can cause no dealer around here carries it. Actually I bought 2 but have no fireplace mantle to sit the other one on, so it will be the centerpiece on my dining room table
