Default Re-jetting

Okay, I'm going to be installing Vance and Hines Short Shots on my '87 FXR as the original pipes are pretty beat up and scratched. It has the original carb and air cleaner set up. I am assuming it is a Keihin butterfly carb by looking at the pictures in the service and parts manual (the only way I know to identify as to now). Any other way of identifying would be great.

I don't have any plans to change out the air cleaner with the pipes, so my question is, am I going to need to re-jet with just the exhaust change?

Right now it seems to have a lean off-idle roll-out stumble/backfire when it is cold outside and the bike isn't quite warmed up. I have yet to pull the plugs and inspect them; will do that this coming weekend and photograph them.

The bike has around 17,000 miles on it so far.

Thanks in advance for any answers...

Probably you will have to up the pilot jet size I would go to a high flow air filter like a K&N Make sure you support these pipes properly I've seen alot of cracked Vance and Hinds pipes on FXR's over the years

Do yourself a favor, i know this isnt probably what you want to hear, but since it is winter time, shop for a later cv 91-98, and a intake, both could be had for 100 bux, then jet the bike, use a 46 pilot, 175-185 main, air screw 1.5 turns out, and that will give you a very good baseline, youll thank me later, guaranteed. chad.

Good advice from Chad, as usual...
Take a look at this..I've found it to be very helpful, and there is a ton of other great info on this site...if you haven't already seen it.

http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/hd_cv_mods.htm

I'd really suggest an Arlen Ness Big Sucker intake. One can be had fairly cheaply, and they will open up your intake system very well.

Hope this helps...

Okay, so I have bought a CV off a '92 FXR...came with intake, choke cable and complete air cleaner. Seemed like a good deal off Ebay.

Have part numbers for jets and getting them on the way...can't wait to get the carb put on and tuned up.

I am getting the #45 jet and also buying a #175 and #180 (going to try both, to see which one works better). Good reading at nightrider.com! Thanks for the help so far.

Is the air cleaner on the CV stock? As said a high flow will really make a difference with the new pipes. A stock CV air cleaner is still pretty restrictive.

I'm going to "ventilate" the factory air cleaner and use an aftermarket element. Kind of going the inexpensive route until I figure what air cleaner I really want.

BTW, I'm kind of digging the oval Sportster looking air cleaner from V-Twin.

I run a Hypercharger Pro (large K&N element) and V&H Dresser Duals with straight fishtails. I run a 45 idle jet and 175 main jet, and the idle screw about 2 1/2 turns out. Engine runs perfectly, and the plugs are nice and white. I would definitely recommend an "EZ Just" idle screw - it's a thumbscrew that replaces the stock idle mixture screw, and sticks out of the bottom of the carb... it make it very easy to adjust the idle mixture with the engine running without having to get a little screwdriver up in there.

I saw one of those on J & P's site. Looked like a pretty good idea.

Okay, carb is on....man what a difference! Used the #45 and #175. Two turns out on the main idle.

I runs like a completely different bike. Starts and idles perfect.

Thanks for the advice from all!
