Default Locating Obsolete Accessories

Look me up. Out of nostalgia, I've kept every catalog I ever worked with. Even though some shops might shrug their shoulders and say they can't get it, or worse still, deny it ever existed, I'll get you the part number. Not a bad collection if I say so myself.

The MoCo had the intuitiveness to link dealer inventories, which is great, but what about an onlive archive? Nope. That's up to old ****s like me.

Yeah, and you've noticed (no doubt), how the the size/weight of that catalog has grown since I got my bike in 1993 (picture a few years ago).

I have the Accessory Catalogs going back to the 80s. They are a great resource for making my ride not look like anyone else's.

Yes, the pamphlet stapled spine style is gone. What irks me is that Custom Chrome, Drag Specialties, Biker's Choice... all offer a catalog with references in it to hard parts. H-D seems stuck on this "Keep the cost under $6" mentality. There are CURRENT, STOCKED accessories available that aren't in the 2010 catalog! They got bumped for newer stuff that only fits 2009 and up? It slows a line down right quick when a cutomer with a 2006 bike has to wait while we try to remember which catalog the part first appeared in and which one it's excluded from.

Once when I was looking for some part for my Super Glide the parts guy asked me if I wanted the dealerships old Part and Accessories catalogs. I told him keep them, that they would be safer where they were at. Guess what happened? The place burnt down a month later! I still think of that every time I'm at that parts counter.

When I was looking for a pair of front brake calipers for an '80-'82 FLT, I could barely get a parts guy to look for me, much less tell me if another dealer had it in stock. By the time I read off the suffix- which is a 79- they wanted nothing to do with me.

Worse yet was when I asked three different dealerships to let me pay over the phone for an hour with a tech, and ask 15 minutes worth of questions. I wasn't asking to speak to a tech for free- I offered to pay- but they didn't want to do that either.

Because I couldn't get the original calipers, I wanted to know if there would be any problems using a later model slider with my '80 FLT front end so I could go to a more readily available set of front calipers.

No one wanted to comment. One guy on the forums here said I'd be okay with it, but I couldn't be sure and the MoCo dealers didn't really care about little old me and my old bike.

I have been looking in my Factory Part Catalogs, the J&P, and my Dennis Kirk catalogs. The Lower legs and brake calipers changed in the 1984 model year. You can use lower legs and brake calipers to 1983, but it looks like you can not use 1984 and later. From the cross referencing of parts, the all change in 1984.

The tubes were 41mm in 1980 to 1996 on the 5 speed FLT. (stock length 20 7/8" 45950-77A or chrome tube 45417-80)

I get nothing but confused looks from the dealership when I try to get parts for my 85 Wide Glide. they almost always go to the dyna catalogs until I correct them. I think most of them worked at Papa Johns 2 weeks prior. When they can't help me I tell them I'll be back when I need a tshirt or a sticker.
