btw, them are awesome numbers with basically a stock motor.

Didn't want to hijack the thread, but with some of the experts posting I could use a little help. Running an 85" engine @ 10.5 to 1 with ported and decked SE heads @ 72cc's. The recommended cam when built was a V-Thunder EVL 5015. The bike has been dynoed and puts out the numbers, but with it being a mid range-top end cam duration wise has poor street manners as one would expect (around 2500rpm). Screw the throttle on and the bike is a rocketship and with the six speed cruising at 2800-2900 rpm @85mph is a dream.

Thinking about knocking the cam back down a notch to the EVL-5010 that keeps the lift that the ported heads like @585, but knocks back about 8 degrees on the duration from 252 to 244 and drops the intake and exhaust closing points from 26/22 46/42 52/48 20/16. Overlap back from 46 to 38 and the same LSA @103. I'd also like to keep the cranking compression at a reasonable level.

Any ideas or recommendations??

Buddy, you listed a good answer with the VT 5010, I have a DM581 and a good manored cam with alot of range, it has a 42 intake closing and starter friendly, throwing an option your way.
If your a Woods guy, several options with your compression.

Well, im no harley expert, but i can tell you that in almost every type of engine ive built, lift has the smallest variable on what kinda power a engine makes, so i dont even pay attention to that number, it doesnt exsist in my own lil world,, duration, lsa, overlap have a greater influence on engine as a whole than lift, with that being out of the way, if your looking for more streetability, your on the right track, shorten the duration, and widen the lsa, it will make more compression and the vaccum signal will increase at lower rpms, youll be happier, and even tho you say the bike makes numbers, it needs to make them in the correct place, it could make 110 hp at 6500 rpm, but thats not where the bike is ever! With that being said, Your on the right track with the 5010, or As mentioned earlier, The dm580, has a nice duration at 248 and brings your overlap down and widens out the lsa, hope i just didnt tell u what you already knew....lol....

p.s, you say your chambers are at 72cc with a se head, i thought they were 65cc from the factory?

1997bagger and gsxrboy96, Thanks for the replies.

gsxkboy96, Stock SE heads are 72cc's, so after the chamber work was done they had to be decked .010 to bring them back to 72cc's, Installing SE heads on a stock engine will raise the compresion 1 point. My setup is 9.5 to 1 flat tops CP pistons with the 72cc head = 10.5 to 1.

1997 bagger, not a Woods guy, too noisy with the ramps they use like the Andrews grinds, my current VT5015 is very close to a Woods 9. Thanks for the option on the DM, I'll look into that. I like the VT cams as they are quiet due to the ramp design even with roller rockers my valve train is quiet and I use my original cam gear.

My heads were flowed and like .585 lift or better, the original recommendatons were the VT 5015 or a T-Man 590. Just for $hits and giggles, 98.6hp/95.3 tq the way she sits with Samson F-109 staggered duals. Just looking for a bit more streetablity that is tied into duration, overlap and LSA as we know.

Buddy, big numbers for the Evo! I ran the 5005 in a 89" SE head and very happy with the power and quiet as a stock engine, my ccp was up there and took out a starter clutch and ring gear, changed to the DM to relieve some pressure, the 5010 would of been my next step but the DM came available for great price and has been a good cam for the last 2 seasons.
