I am having backfiring issues with my bike. It backfires when I let off of the throttle. I have had a compression test done and it was ok. I am kinda at a dead end as to what the problem may be. Anyone have similiar problems or know of a good solution?? Thanks in advance.
I had a crack at the Y-Pipe creating a pretty good exhaust leak. I would let off the throttle quickly and it would backfire. Repaired the exhaust and the backfiring went away...or at least I couldn't hear it anymore.
Is your bike EFI or carburetor? A few Glides had EFI at that time....and that old system was/is know to do funky stuff.
The older EFI Magnetti Marelli definatley had its shortcomings....I've seen several backfiring issues due to the throttlebody. Check around the throttlebody for any intake leaks.....
If check engine light is on.....fix this first
I would start by cleaning the throttle body.....
Then make sure everything is adjusted properly.....cold/hot idle. Make sure the Idle Speed Control is working. A malfunctioned one can cause some really strange issues.
Rer-oute the crankcase breather so all the oil does not dump into the aircleaner.....for some reason, that itself cured many problems I use to have.
My 96 FLHT had decel pop below 2500rpm which turned out to be-- you guessed it--- crack at the Y pipe which on examination had been repaired before.
I nailed a complete system from an 02 model including heat shields, but excluding mufflers on Ebay USA for $60 USD-- cost me another $60 to get it here but well worth it.
My experience has been that a backfire on decell is usually an exhaust leak. As many others have stated, the "Y" tube is notorious for cracking. I put a fullsac true dual conversion on mine, eliminating the crossover completely and have no issues.
I also dumped my M&M EFI last year for Crane Hi-4 and a Super E.
