Default Easiest way to

Scrape base gaskets, I have three bikes i have to do this weekend, all being base gaskets, I usually spend up to a hour on a pair of jugs with a razor blade trying to scrape this hard *** gaskets off, is there a way to soften them up? or a remover that may help? anything would be appreciated, thanks chad.

Permatex makes a spray that helps sometimes. I use phenolic scrapers that can not gouge the surface.

I use brake cleaner and a green scoth brite pad. Or the gasket remover, I think the loctite version is called chisel.

I havent tried it, but Ford sells a gasket remover for some of its aluminum engines. It's actually made to disolve the sillicone sealer, but may work well in this application.. Its pretty caustic and could possibly effect the powder coat so you'd have to be careful, but may be worth a try.. Its kind of like a paint stripper, you slather it on, let it sit then scrape it off with a plastic scraper.. Your local Ford dealer should have it on the shelf.. I could get you a part number if you wanted..

I use Aircraft Paint stripper but it needs to lay on and work for a while, preferably overnight and it WILL take the powdercoat off if you get sloopy. And did you know that the HD Time Guide allows less time for base gaskets than a head gasket job? Go figure...

Permatex gasket remover, you may need to do more than one application scrapping in between. Ususaaly the gaskets come off pretty easy, unless someone used a heavy duty sealer. We normally use steel base gaskets and spray them with copper coat.
